Director of Applications & Science

Dr. Matthew Nelson is currently the Director of Applications & Science at ChemImage Corporation.  Dr. Nelson received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1998.  His research involved developing novel optical systems for molecular spectroscopic applications.  Dr. Nelson has lectured widely (over 100 presentations), authored/co-authored 30 publications including two book chapters and has been co-inventor on 16 patents (eight pending), the majority of which are related to Chemical Imaging technology (i.e., instrumentation, methodology and applications).  As Director of Applications & Science, Dr. Nelson’s responsibilities include the following:

  • Lead spectroscopy and imaging contract research study effort
  • Manage the Applications Science Division personnel & budget
  • Support the expansion of ChemImage’s contract research business area
  • Secure research funding from federal and state granting agencies via proposal writing and other collaborative efforts
  • Maintain a presence in the research community through publications of refereed papers, trade journal literature, review articles, participation in local scientific societies and through presentation of results at scientific meetings
  • Develop new chemical imaging and spectroscopy technologies that will support chemical, material science, and clinical markets
  • Develop hardware and software improvements to ChemImage products
  • Perform customer support and instrumentation service duties
