Opto-Mechanical Engineer
Reports to: Director of Engineering

This job description represents a description of the major job responsibilities that anyone assigned to this job would be held accountable to perform.

Purpose of Job

  • Lead the optomechanical engineering to support ChemImage product roadmaps. Design and develop optical and imaging systems, including optical imaging products, optical components, image processing, signal processing technology, mems, and optical systems.
  • Evaluate technology suggest design and develop improved as well as new optomechanical products for our customer market needs. 
  • Take responsibility for conceptual and detailed system design, for the implementation and validation of opto-mechanical engineering design and the final design documentation. Ensure documentation is complete, accurate, archived and maintainable.
  • Work closely with our hardware, software and application group as well as customers to provide world class support and leading edge products.
  • Interface with vendors and subcontractors for quotations and fabrication purchases. 
  • Take responsibility for the timely and within budget execution of assigned projects and product development programs.

Specific areas of responsibility will include optomechanical design concepts, documentation and project management efforts on new products and improvement activities regarding price/performance, manufacturability and serviceability on existing products.

Regular Job Duties/Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Director of Engineering with input from other Directors and authorized colleagues (i.e. specific program managers), suggest design concepts, feasibility studies, assembly and evaluation test of ChemImage products.

  • Perform design, modeling and analysis on a wide range of optical products including lasers, fiber-optic couplers, lenses, diffusers, beam shapers, waveguides, micro-lens arrays, micro-alignment structures and others.
  • Develop testing criteria to verify operation, correlate performance and manufacturing tolerances, update model, and re-issue manufacturing specs.
  • Develop and maintain production cost estimates and bill of material lists (BOM) for manufactured systems. Take responsibility for the organization and maintenance of the drawing database and bill of materials. Perform incoming inspection on purchased material and fabrications.
  • Provide significant advances to the products and technology embodied at ChemImage. Develop and maintain a list of project efforts and estimated/ budgeted man-hours and completion dates. In conjunction with the Director of Engineering prioritize the efforts and develop a personal schedule.
  • Manage multiple tasks consistent with immediate priorities, department and ChemImage objectives and strategy.
    Under the direction of the Director of Engineering and authorized colleagues, assist in the estimation of manufacturing costs for bid and proposal efforts.
  • Contribute to the collation of information about competitors.  Carry out analysis of competitive activity as required.
  • Be prepared to spend time in-field to visit customers, attending conferences, meetings and exhibition. Occasionally fill in for other personnel. Occasionally perform duties of an advanced or lower level to meet business needs.

Requirements

Education:
  • B.S./M.S. or above in Optomechanical Engineering.

Experience:
  • 5-15 years industry experience;
  • 5 plus years design experience of opto-mechanical design/ systems engineering experience in a commercial environment; proficiency in optical design, imaging, and electro-optic components and systems;
  • Strong experience developing optomechanical concept proposals;

Skills/Attributes:
  • Understanding of complex optical systems as it relates to imaging detectors, laser delivery and beam shaping, UV, Visible, NIR and IR optical systems engineering including environmental factors.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems including fasteners and welding. Hands-on experience with mechanical systems, parts assembly, failure prediction and analysis.
  • Must understand tolerance, assembly and mounting of opto-mechanical systems; incl. understanding of design-for-manufacturability concepts. Must understand manufacturing processes and be capable of coordinating the manufacture of devices.
  • Must have a high level of PC proficiency. Solid modeling experience. SolidWorks/ SolidEdge/ ProEngineer
  • Ability to train others regarding design, alignment and troubleshooting opto-mechanical systems.
  • Desire to pay attention to detail and ensure completeness of designs. Proven track record of on time, within budget designs.
  • Strong business communication skills. Clear and very high quality, professional verbal and written skills are essential. Ability to absorb, process and effectively communicate detailed/complex and sensitive information.
  • Strong troubleshooting and pro-active problem resolving skills.
