When a user wants to perform more than one assay on the same cells or tissue, multiple expensive fluorescent probes and filter sets are required. However, the overlapping fluorescence spectrum of many probes precludes the use of multiple dyes in routine use. Fluorescence imaging of biological samples using tunable filter systems helps the pathologist overcome the challenge of using multiple dyes for greater efficiency without sacrificing accuracy.

Fluorescence spectral images are acquired from fluorescent samples illuminated by an appropriate light source. Images are taken with either a microscope or a stand-off macroscope. The images are analyzed using chemometric-based approaches to answer questions related to the biological samples.
